We've taken taxis, buses and the sky train (like a monorail) around Bangkok and the local buses are cheapest hands down; you just can't tell where you are going.
Tuk tuks can be fun - especially if yyou get an awesome driver who has recently seen the James Bond Visa add on T.V. - but the cost a fair bit in reality.
